The Chief Steward: A Manual on Pastoral Leadership was written by the Rev. J.E. Herrmann in 1950.
The Rev. Nathan Meador, assistant coordinator of the LCMS Stewardship Ministry, says the resource has timeless advice despite being written more than 60 years ago.
“The Chief Steward remains to this day the ‘gold standard’ of stewardship in the LCMS,” Meador noted. “… Many of the recommendations at the conclusion of the work are outdated. But the gold is to be found in the first few chapters. This master work lays out stewardship and the role of stewardship leaders in the congregation beautifully. It is well worth the read for one looking to get a firmer grip on the subject.”
