“Mercy [is] the church’s corporate task,” LCMS President Rev. Dr. Matthew C. Harrison wrote in a 2004 booklet called “The Church Is a Mercy Place.” This statement was true during the time of the apostles, for Luther and for us today.
The September 2024 issue of Sharing from LCMS World Relief and Human Care looks at two ways that the LCMS continues to carry out mercy in Jesus’ name:
- In the Dominican Republic, LCMS missionaries and Dominican Lutherans operate Good Shepherd Lutheran Homes, a group home for people with intellectual and development disabilities. The group home’s six residents have been welcomed with open arms into the life of the nearby Lutheran church and school.
- In the United States, LCMS Office of National Mission staff have been hard at work developing resources that address today’s tough topics. For example, the “Looking at Life in the Womb” curriculum teaches students about the sanctity of human life, and a series of Bible studies, articles, podcasts and events have been developed to equip Lutherans to respond to sexual orientation and gender identity issues.
