LCMS Worship provides suggestions for liturgy, psalms, readings, and hymns to use during 2023 midweek Advent services.

This year’s services focus on the life and ministry of St. John the Baptist, the one appointed by God to prepare the way for the promised Messiah by calling sinners to repentance, even to the point of martyrdom.

For those congregations following the One-Year Lectionary, the Third Sunday in Advent, wherein the account of John the Baptist in prison is read, falls in sequence with these three midweek readings.

Since Christmas Eve occurs on a Sunday, there is a special opportunity to observe the Vigil of Christmas on Sunday morning in place of the customary Fourth Sunday in Advent. Service propers and sermon suggestions are provided for those who wish to take advantage of this option.

Vespers or Evening Prayer is appropriate for the season, and the suggested hymns are from Lutheran Service Book.
