“Jesus came to preach the Gospel and have compassion upon the least, the last, the small, the great, the hurting, the sick, the deaf, the mute and more,” writes the Rev. Dr. Matthew C. Harrison, president of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS). “The church follows Jesus’ command and example.”

The first Sharing issue of 2025 shares two stories about how Lutherans are involved in proclaiming the forgiveness and freedom of the Gospel to those still held captive by sin:

  • In Germany, LCMS missionaries are serving alongside German pastors as they care for and instruct former Muslims in the Lutheran faith.
  • In Taylorville, Ill., the Rev. Rodney Blomquist holds a weekly Bible study for men in prison, where he shares “the Word of God for their salvation and the strengthening of their faith.” Blomquist has been serving as a volunteer prison chaplain for 34 years.
