Seasons of remembrance are never confined only to the calendar holidays designated for them.
For those who serve, those who have served and the families of our country’s military members, reminders of loss, grief and trauma in the line of duty can be grim and constant companions. The duality of serving one’s country, even to the point of injury (physical and otherwise) or death, and existing as a sanctified child of God is also a tension that can cause spiritual turmoil.
But this duality can provide the greatest hope and assurance. Of utmost importance is the fact that the Lord is with us, and a military vocation is both necessary and a testament to one’s faith.
In this issue of So Help Me God, the newsletter of LCMS Ministry to the Armed Forces, Chaplain Steven Hokana writes of the values reflected between a life of faith and military service. He draws from Luther’s words on the matter, gives Scripture passages for comfort that are focused on a variety of pertinent needs, and charges us to remember those who defend our country with their lives.
Such exhortation is befitting of the honor the fallen, wounded, missing, veteran and active-duty men and women of the military deserve. We remember. We support. And we are grateful. Moreover, we are grateful to God, our heavenly Father, who calls these men and women to such service for our sake, and we commend them to His care — and His Son’s ultimate sacrifice for us in the war for our souls.
